When we started Home Diner, our audience was the “Away From Home” people. If you know us, that shouldn’t come as a surprise. There’s a quiet but significant shift that happens when you move away. You begin noticing the little things you once took for granted. I guess distance does that. For many living alone — in another city, another country — food becomes more than food. It becomes memory, mood, survival, comfort. It’s rarely about elaborate meals. Often, it’s the simple things that anchor us. A bowl of dal. A spoon of raita. The familiar tang of something that reminds you: you’re still connected. If we can stand in for something you so much miss — maybe just a little — we are humbled and grateful. For a long time now, we know we’re doing at least something right. A good meal is more than dinner. It’s a way to belong.
Once, a customer told us, almost feeling guilty: “Ab ghar ki yaad thooodi kam aati hai.”
Funny but deep enough to be reminded time and again, who we are and what we stand for. Happy and grateful to have touched some lives in a small meaningful way.
